One of the serenest places I have found thus far... PL8 is a Durban gem that is hidden in plain sight. This wonderful little restaurant is situated with in a stylish yet charming little hotel in the heart of Morningside’s Buzz zone.
Hotel 64 on Gordon, which houses PL8 restaurant, is found on Gordon Road. The ambiance has an eclectic feel that combines modern/industrial chic with generous hints of colonial charm. The restaurant is situated on the ground floor of the hotel which resembles a Manor styled home. The eye catching scarlet that causes the door and “stoep” to pop, is reflected throughout PL8’s interior décor and design.
The ambiance of PL8 is quiet, calm and friendly. Making is the ideal spot for an unflustered session with friends and family. The staff were great and managed to be both unobtrusive and helpful at the same time. I sometimes had to go and check for our waitress but she was always prompt with tending to our needs when asked. Our request to be moved to an outside table to take advantage of the warm weather was taken care of quickly and cheerful. One gets the feeling that nothing is too much trouble – which is a wonderful experience.
PL8 has a great menu which displays a decent variety of meals to choose from. The menu has scrumptious vegetarian options as well as a more carnivorous selection. With the option to add Chicken to veg meals as well. When it comes to the pricing prepared to be blown away with many of their meals averaging between R55 – R60. Now, with meals in that price range one would forgive you for expecting meager little portions. PL8 meals are generously sized portions and presented beautifully. Our food did take a fair amount of time to get to the table, but did not exceed to the point of irritation. So I would not recommend this if you are in a hurry as PL8 is a combination of enjoying the ambiance as well as your meal. When it comes to the meals however, the only thing better then how good the food looks on your “PL8” (i couldn't resist) is the taste.
